Edward Preston Smoothing Plane No. 14
The Edward Preston smoothing plane number '14' I believe only had a very short production
period up until 1933/1934. The number '14' and the number '1014' smoothing planes were
their final bench plane designs which one can't help noticing were strikingly similar
to the Stanley smoothing planes and its soon-to-follow successor, the Record '04'.
I have a trade catalogue which is advertising Stanley, Record and "Acorn" brand iron
bench planes as well as this Preston plane.
The plane is nine inches long, equivalent to model number '4' smoothing planes. It has
machine ground sides and base, a Chromium plated lever and a two inch wide Chrome
Alloy cutting iron.
There is also a 10 inch version of this plane which is equivalent to model number
'4 1/2' smoothing planes.
Plane Markings
"PRESTON" - (raised) found at the front of the plane in front of the front knob.
"No 14" - (raised) found at the rear of the plane in front of the rear handle.
"PRESTON" - found on the lever cap face. The letters 'PRESTON'
are positioned raised from the red Preston coloured background.
