Small Edward Preston Side Rebate Plane

The small Edward Preston side rabbet plane is a very useful tool for side rabbeting and cleaning grooves in mouldings of all kinds. The nose of this plane can be removed for working close up into corners. It has right-hand and left-hand cutting irons which are made of cast steel and the plane is Nickel-plated with a Rosewood polished knob.

This plane was sold with and without an adjustable and reversible depth stop.

This Edward Preston side rebate plane was the smaller of the two side rebate planes produced in their range of innovative tools. After Edward Preston ceased trading, this plane was produced by Record in the form of the Record 2506 and 2506S side rebate planes until 1965 and 1977 respectively. This model of plane has recently been given a modern facelift by Veritas Tools.

The other of the two Preston side rebate planes was the larger and quite distinctive model number 1369 with patent adjustable cutting irons.

It is quite common to see loss of Nickel-plating on these planes, particularly around the edges.

Plane Markings

"EP" (EP cherry trade mark) - found on the rear side of the plane.

"E. Preston & Sons, Birm. Eng." and the EP cherry trade mark - on each blade.
