Edward Preston Side Rebate Plane, 1369

The Edward Preston 1369 patent adjustable side rebate plane is a combined right and left hand side rabbet plane which is designed for side rabbeting, increasing the size of grooves for panels, cleaning grooves and such like. The nose of this plane can be removed for working close up into corners.

Apart from the more distinctive design and the size, the main difference the larger Preston side rebate plane had over the smaller version was that it had plane iron adjusters to allow the user to quickly and easily adjust the blades to suit the required cut.

This large Edward Preston side rebate plane was the bigger of these types of Preston planes. In fact this is the largest metal side rebate plane of this style produced by any of the larger well know makers.

This plane was Nickel-plated. The photo on the right shows this plane with missing Nickel-plating at the edges, this is quite common.

This plane is considered fairly rare. The planes which command the higher prices are those in very good condition with all of their Nickel-plating and original working parts.

The Preston 1369 plane side rebate plane is used for accurate rebate and joint trimming work.

Plane Markings

"EP" (EP cherry trade mark) - found on either side of the plane.

"Preston England, EP" (EP cherry trade mark) - this is found on top of the lever cap.
