Edward Preston Bullnose Plane 1355

The Edward Preston bullnose plane, number 1355, is a widely familiar style of plane
used for the final trimming of joints. The main advantage of the bullnose plane is that
the mouth is close to the front, making the plane convenient for working into corners.
The 1355 bullnose plane has an adjustable blade. The plane iron is adjusted by turning
the milled nut (seen at the rear of the plane). The blade is fixed in place by tightening
the lever cap. This plane was originally advertised as a 'patent adjustable bull nose rabbet plane'.
The 1355 was a very popular style of bullnose plane whose popularity continued throughout
the 20th century and which is still popular today, over a 100 years from when Preston
first introduced this model.
After Preston had stopped producing this plane in the 1930's,
this style of plane was used by Record from the 1930's - 1990's. Currently a very
similar Clifton bullnose plane is sold today after being re-introduced only a few
years ago.
This type of plane seems to be one of the most common Preston planes which appear today.
There is also a 'patent adjustable bull nose rabbet and chamfer plane' which is
very similar in appearance to this model with the main difference being the addition
of a side fence.
